Clueless 1L question
Can any of you tell me if there are any comparative advantages or disadvantages between Westlaw and LexisNexis? In other words, is one "better"? And for what? And if I only use one system to research my memo am I screwing myself?
I think it depends on the task. For me, Westlaw is better for litigation, but Lexis is best for legislative or admin law. Sheperdizing is the one exception to that rule.
no, but wait. you can buy CDs via amazon on lexis. it's the only way i update my music collection anymore. (yes, lexis ultimate rewards helped me free fiona apple).
as for searching: i like the "at least" command on Lexis if you want docs that really mine your topic in depth; this is super helpful for law reviews. i actually think West's headnotes are better, and it's easier to find if your point of law has been criticized/overturned with mobetta headnotes. the westlaw results plus is also pretty great--it automatically gives you ALR articles on point, which is helpful if you're just starting out.
hakim, since i'm working on an admin project right now--i'd love to hear of the lexis advantage. oh, i also perfer the lex for its news and business, though its easier to stalk people with westlaw's people finder.
clearly i spend too much time on both these services ... but since i've been out in the "bill per search" world a bit, i really appreciate the free services (and the points!)

i like westlaw better. it just seems more intuitive to me. but i would suggest being familiar with both because you don't know which system your employer will use.
