david brooks on the conf. hearings

even funnier than the john stewart clip, if you consider the limited medium, was "ready? cue the sun...," a NY Times column by safire replacement david brooks:

(i'd reprint it here if i wasn't sure NYT would come & get me in my sleep.)

Brownback's questions followed by Coburn were done in front of one other senator, the Chairman, and I think he was only there because he was required to. For all the bashing of Kennedy leaving (man, this makes me sick, defending Kennedy) the hearings to go on CNN, there were at least three other judiciary members leaving the hearing to appear on TV, including a Senator who said the hearings are so full of bombast because of TV.

Beautiful article...does anyone else think that if Roberts was truly in a soundproof booth surrounded by ravenous sharks and only accompanied by David Copperfield (for diversity sake it could be David Blaine) for the duration of the hearing we would have cared more?
